We have news coming out of India for you. The country has been on alert since last Saturday’s string of bomb attacks. Security is tight leaving the country’s public places and shopping malls deserted.
STORY:
Shopping malls and market places are deserted in Ahmedabad. This comes after 16 bombs ripped the city last Saturday.
The attack came just one day after a bomb exploded in Bangalore.
Locals say authorities haven’t done enough to stop terrorist attacks. So now, mall security personnel are taking no chances and are searching all customers.
[Anshu Mathur, Mall Manager]:
“After the bomb blast, we had (are) physically frisking each and every customer that (who) is walking in. Besides this, in the basements where we have two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking, we are checking every compartment of any vehicle that is coming in.”
But shopkeepers complain all the searches keep customers at bay. Business has been paralyzed over the past few days.
[Jagdish Purohit, Businessman]:
“It has affected a lot and 65-75% (of) business has gone down because of this. People are afraid to come to the public places right now.”
After the blasts, police recovered more than twenty unexploded bombs in the industrial city of Surat.
All cities in India are on alert, with extra police stationed at malls, train stations and temples.
A group calling itself the “Indian Mujahideen” claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad attack. They sent an e-mail five minutes before the first blast saying the attack is in revenge for the 2002 Gujarat Massacre-where 2,500 Muslims were attacked by Hindu mobs.
